Considering Getting A Dog.

I have been a pet owner for most of my life and a veterinarian for almost half of my life, so I have seen my fair share of pets and pet owners. One of the biggest things I hate is seeing people jump at the decision to buy a dog without taking the time to think about this decision. When the decision to adopt a dog as an animal was made carelessly, the owners and the dog suffered equally.

Before you run out and buy a dog, take the time to think about your decision. Think about your current life. How can bringing a new dog to a picture affect things? Do you have enough time, energy and money to support a dog in your family? Sure, the idea sounds good now, but is it a wise choice?

If you are sure you can manage to bring a dog to your home and you are sure you have what it takes to take care of your dog, then keep an eye out and start researching what kind of dog might be right for you. A dog is not a dog it is not a dog. I hate to hear people talk about not caring what kind of dog they get. The breeds of dogs are different and require very different care. Learn what to do with the dogs you are interested in before buying.

It is good to visit people with dog breeds that you are interested in. See what their lives are like with the dog in the picture. The more research you do, the better you will be when you finally bring the dog into your home. Learn all you can from other dog owners and get their wisdom. I can assure you that having a dog as an animal is a good thing but a difficult one.

Prepare your family before bringing a dog into your home. Talk honestly about the bonds that will bring the dog to your home. Divide the tasks so that everyone can feel the important role they play. The family will always do better with the dog when they fully understand the work and dedication it will take to keep the dog alive and well.

I love seeing families bring dogs into their homes. I force, however, to see that the process is well done. Please use caution and discretion as you want to make the dog a part of your family.
